In a significant development ahead of the Edo 2024 Governorship election, all 192 Ward Councillors in Edo State have publicly endorsed Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate. The councillors also passed a vote of confidence on incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki, praising his administration for prompt salary payments and providing vehicles to legislative leaders.
This endorsement comes in direct response to claims made by Mr. Agbukor Lucky, who identifies himself as the APC Deputy Chairman for Media and Publicity in Etsako East LGA. Lucky had alleged that the councillors were disgruntled over unpaid salaries and allowances, and were planning to work against the PDP candidate.
In an emergency meeting held in Agenebode, legislative leaders from across the state they have vehemently denied these allegations. Hon. Solomon Oguma from Etsako East (Edo North) described Governor Obaseki as “the best governor,” citing his provision of vehicles to legislative leaders. Hon. Augustine Oleleayegbele from Igueben (Edo Central) dismissed the APC’s claims as baseless, while Hon. Omoruyi Igbinake from Ovia North East (Edo South) called the allegations “a bloody lie.”
The councillors, through a communique issued by Mr Benjamin Atu, Chief Press Secretary of Etsako East Local Government Council, accused the APC of attempting to sow confusion and disrupt law and order in the state. They called for an investigation into the source of what they termed a “malicious and devilish campaign of calumny.”
Expressing confidence in Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy, the councillors pledged to deliver victory for him in their respective wards and units. They praised Governor Obaseki’s leadership, describing him as “the best thing that has ever happened to Edo State.”
The statement also criticised the APC’s national leadership, urging them to focus on addressing the country’s economic challenges rather than spreading what they consider misinformation about Edo State politics.
This development highlights the intensifying political landscape in Edo State as the September governorship election approaches, with both the PDP and APC vying for crucial local support.
