National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it’s making significant strides in its emergency response efforts to support residents affected by the devastating flooding in Maiduguri and Jere Councils of Borno State.

Gatekeepers News report that the ongoing operations have successfully rescued over 400 individuals from flood-affected areas. As the situation evolves, teams are mobilizing to address urgent needs across various camps.

“Our Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been working tirelessly in the field, and we are committed to reaching everyone affected by this disaster,” said a NEMA zonal coordinator, Sirajo Garba, said.

“The safety and well-being of these individuals is our top priority.”

In addition to rescue operations, NEMA’s Medical Intervention and Care Unit (MICU) has provided essential first aid and treatment to 171 individuals across camps.

“Every life matters, and our medical team is dedicated to ensuring that those in need receive immediate care,” the spokesperson added.

Water supply remains a critical issue, with NEMA’s water tanker providing round-the-clock access to clean water at the Fannami Gubio Camp, which has been grappling with severe shortages.

“Access to potable water is vital for health and hygiene; we are doing everything we can to ensure that no one goes thirsty,” stated the agency.

In a collaborative effort to enhance the response, NEMA’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team has been actively engaging with various stakeholders. A recent visit from a high-level United Nations delegation underscored the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing the crisis.

“Our partnership with organizations like MSF is crucial; we’re establishing a temporary health facility in Modu Fannami Camp to provide immediate medical assistance,” the Zonal Coordinator remarked.

Additionally, NEMA has identified gaps in cooking materials and is liaising with Civil Society Organizations to supply additional pots and utensils to families in need. The M&E team is also working to deploy sanitation resources and has initiated support for newly established camps that currently lack governmental presence.

“Every action taken today lays the groundwork for a more resilient tomorrow. We are focused on rebuilding lives and communities affected by this disaster,” concluded the NEMA Zonal Coordinator.
