John Amos, a Hollywood actor known for his roles in ‘Coming To America’ as Cleo McDowell, ‘Roots’ as Kunta Kinte, and ‘Good Times’ as James Evans Sr. is dead.
Gatekeepers News reports that the actor’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos announced his passing through a statement released on Tuesday.
According to his son, the 84-year-old actor died of natural causes on August 21.
He described his father as a man with a “heart of gold”, adding that his legacy “will live on”.
The statement goes, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold and he was loved the world over.”
“Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”
The actor who began his acting career in 1970, was nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards as Outstanding Lead Actor for a single appearance in a Drama or Comedy series for his role in ‘Roots’ in 1977.
He was also nominated for NAACP Image Awards as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in ‘In the House’ in 1996.
Among notable awards received by the actor were three TV Land Awards in 2004, 2006, and 2007 for his role in ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’, ‘Good Times’, and ‘Roots’ respectively.
