2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Troost-Ekong Celebrates Super Eagles Win Against Libya

Super Eagles captain, Troost-Ekong
has celebrated the win of the team as Disciplinary Board of Confederation of African Football (CAF) passed its ruling regarding 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match between Libya and Nigeria.

Gatekeepers News reports that Super Eagles were stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for over 13 hours when they arrived in Libya on Sunday, October 13, 2024.

The players who were supposed to compete against their host country in return leg of the match and officials slept at the airport and were denied access to food and internet.

The disciplinary board in its ruling signed by its chairman, Ousmane Kane, said that Libyan Football Federation was in breach of Article 31 of AFCON Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code and awarded Nigeria three points and three goals from the abandoned match.

The ruling goes, “The Libyan Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.”

“The match No. 87, Libya v Nigeria, of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi), is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (with a record of 3-0).”

The disciplinary board also ordered Libya Football Federation to pay a fine of USD 50,000 within 60 days of notification of the present decision.

Reacting through a post on his verified X.com, Super Eagles captain, Troost-Ekong
rejoiced over the team’s win adding that it means the team is one step closer to the AFCON 2025.

He wrote, “JUSTICE: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria. Libya fined $50,000.”

“The plane was diverted 300km from the scheduled airport, even when the pilot told them he was low on fuel.”

“One step closer to our target AFCON 2025.”
