Staff at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) headquarters in Washington, D.C. received an email instructing them to stay home and work remotely on Monday, February 3, 2025.
Gatekeepers News reports that the email cited “direction from Agency leadership” as the reason for the closure, with only essential personnel allowed to report to the office.
“At the direction of Agency leadership, the USAID headquarters at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, D.C. will be closed to Agency personnel on Monday, February 3, 2025,” the email reads.
“Agency personnel normally assigned to work at USAID headquarters will work remotely tomorrow, with the exception of personnel with essential on-site and building maintenance functions individually contacted by senior leadership.”
This development follows Elon Musk’s statement that US President Donald Trump has agreed to shut down USAID.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and X, claimed that Trump confirmed the shutdown, saying “Yes we are shutting it down” during an X Spaces stream.
USAID is the world’s leading international development agency, responsible for billions of dollars in US aid projects globally. The agency’s funds primarily support disaster relief efforts, development, and global health initiatives.
Reports suggest that Trump plans to issue an executive order dismantling USAID and transferring its operations to the State Department.
Additionally, two top security officials at the agency have been placed on administrative leave for refusing to allow personnel from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Musk, to access classified material.
