Chief Mrs Anike Agbaje-Williams, renowned as Africa’s first face on television, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, 26th February 2025, at the age of 88.
Gatekeepers News reports that she spent the majority of her life in Ibadan, where she became a beloved figure in the media industry.
Born on 23rd October 1936, Agbaje-Williams made history as the first personality to appear on Western Nigerian Television (WNTV), the continent’s inaugural television station. She graced the screens on both the Test Transmission Night and the Official Opening Night, which took place on Saturday, 31st October 1959. In addition, she was the first voice to be heard on Africa’s first commercial radio station, WNBS, earning her the title of “Double-First.” Agbaje-Williams enjoyed a distinguished career, rising through the ranks before retiring in July 1986 as a respected producer and director of programmes.
Her passing is a profound loss for her family, who remember her as a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and an icon in the broadcasting world. The family expressed their deep sorrow, noting that her impact would resonate not only within their circles but also across the nation and beyond.
The Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) also mourns her passing. In a statement by the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, Sulaiman Aledeh, he remarked that Mama Anike Agbaje-Williams will be sorely missed. He extended prayers for her family, asking for the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and requesting that God grant her soul eternal rest.
In a further statement released on behalf of the family, Mrs Banji Sokoya highlighted that Agbaje-Williams “lived a glorious, remarkable, and impactful life” and that they would forever cherish her immense love for broadcasting, her passion for life, and her devotion to God. Her legacy extends beyond her impressive career, as she inspired countless fans and mentees throughout her life.
As the family navigates this difficult time, they have requested privacy to mourn their loss.
