Captain Of Cargo Ship That Collided With Oil Tanker Charged

Captain of a cargo ship involved in a collision with an oil tanker in the North Sea has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Vladimir Motin, 59, from Primorsky, St Petersburg, Russia, has been placed in police custody and is scheduled to appear at Hull Magistrates Court on Saturday, according to Humberside Police.

The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 10:00 GMT when the Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel Solong collided with the US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate off the East Yorkshire coast.

Tragically, Mark Angelo Pernia, a 38-year-old Filipino crew member aboard the Solong, has been reported missing and is presumed dead, as stated by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Frank Ferguson, head of the Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said: “We have authorised Humberside Police to charge a Russian national in relation to a collision involving two vessels in the North Sea off the east coast of England.”

Ferguson added: “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are now active and that he has the right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
