In a meeting at the White House, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s successor, Mark Carney, made it clear that Canada would not be swayed by President Trump’s suggestion that it become the 51st state.
Gatekeepers News reports that Carney was direct and firm in his response, saying, “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale. We’re sitting in one right now.
“Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign last several months, it’s not for sale. Won’t be for sale, ever.”
Trump responded: “Never say never.”
Trump had expressed his desire for Canada to join the United States, but Carney’s strong stance put the idea to rest.
“Takes two to tango, right?” Trump said, acknowledging the need for mutual agreement.
Carney’s words were a clear indication that Canada would maintain its sovereignty.
The meeting also touched on trade policies, with Trump confirming that tariffs on Canadian goods would remain in place.
“We want to make our own cars… We don’t really want cars from Canada,” Trump said.
Carney countered that the USMCA trade deal would need changes, stating, “Part of the way you conducted these tariffs has taken advantage of existing aspects of USMCA, so it’s going to have to change.”
Carney’s election win, partly attributed to his stance against Trump’s aggression, was praised by Trump, who joked, “I think I was probably the greatest thing that happened to him.”
Experts believe the meeting could be an opportunity to “reset the relationship” between the US and Canada.
