Eintracht Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller believes Liverpool’s recent run of poor results doesn’t reflect their true quality, describing the English champions as “the better team in every game” of their ongoing four-match losing streak.
Gatekeepers News reports the reigning Premier League title holders travel to Germany to face Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday, desperate to halt an unexpected slide. Arne Slot’s side has suffered defeats against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, Chelsea, and most recently Manchester United, marking their first four-game losing streak in over a decade.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Toppmöller insisted Liverpool’s performances have remained strong despite the results.
“Sunday’s game could have been 4-2 for Liverpool,” the Frankfurt coach told reporters on Tuesday. “They’re not in top form, only in the sense of their results. When you watch the games, which of course we did, you see they just seem to lack a bit of spark at the moment.”
He added:
“But in every game, they’ve been the better team and created more chances. We’re expecting a world-class team tomorrow. You’ve got to be aware of what it does to a team to lose four in a row.”
Liverpool last endured such a slump in November 2014, under then-manager Brendan Rodgers.
Among the issues for Slot’s side is a dip in form from Mohamed Salah, who has struggled to find his usual rhythm. Toppmöller, however, was full of admiration for the Egyptian star.
“He was probably among the top three players in the world over the past decade — and still is,” he said.
The Frankfurt coach also commented on Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s £100 million summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, who will be returning to Germany for the first time since his move.
“His performances have been quite decent, even if he hasn’t got the numbers he had in Leverkusen,” Toppmöller said. “He’s at a club where the spotlight is so bright and where people across the world are always watching. I’m incredibly convinced of his quality — I just hope he doesn’t show that tomorrow.”
