Six members of the House of Representatives have defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP).
Gatekeepers News reports that five of the defectors are from Enugu State — Obetta Chidi (Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South), Anayo Onwuegbu (Aninri/Awgu/Oji River), Dennis Agbo (Igbo-Eze North/Udenu), Martins Oke (Igbo Etiti/Uzo Uwani), and Nnolim Nnaji (Nkanu East/Nkanu West).
The sixth lawmaker, Daniel Asama, represents Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency in Plateau State and defected from the Labour Party.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read their defection letters during Thursday’s plenary session. The lawmakers cited protracted and irreconcilable crises within their former parties as the reason for their defection.
Following the announcement, Abbas commended the legislators, saying they had taken the right decision by joining the ruling APC.
Speaking to journalists after the plenary, Nnolim Nnaji said their move was a step borne out of courage, clarity, and shared determination to reposition Enugu State politically and economically.
He said, “For too long, our dear Enugu State has remained in opposition, watching from the sidelines as others shaped the destiny of our nation and accessed opportunities that could have transformed our people’s lives.”
“That era is over. We refuse to remain spectators when we can be key players in Nigeria’s progress.”
Nnaji added that aligning with APC would connect their constituencies to the core of Nigeria’s development agenda. He said, “This alignment will bring more projects, more jobs, better infrastructure, and greater empowerment for our youths, women, and communities.”
He emphasised that the decision was made after deep consideration and a desire to advance the welfare of their constituents.
Nnaji added, “This decision wasn’t made on impulse. It comes from deep reflection and a burning desire to see our people rise above limits and take their rightful place in the national spotlight.”
