Godiya Akwashiki, senator representing Nasarawa North under Social Democratic Party (SDP), has passed away.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Senator died at a hospital in India where he had been receiving treatment, on Wednesday, December 31, after a prolonged illness at the age of 52.

Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. Before his tenure in the upper chamber, he served as Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon LGA, he began his political career in his home community, focusing on development, infrastructure, and empowerment initiatives.

In a statement, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin praised Akwashiki as a man of exceptional calibre, highlighting his contributions to both the Senate and his constituency.

Jibrin said, “Senator Akwashiki was a parliamentarian par excellence who worked hard to enhance the standard of living of the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District and beyond.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family, the entire people of Nasarawa North, and Nasarawa State in general. May God grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

Akwashiki’s death leaves a significant gap in Nasarawa North politics, as he was widely regarded for his dedication to grassroots development and his ability to secure projects across the senatorial district.
