The Pro-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Chief Dan Osi Orbih, has commended Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, for its swift action in securing the release of bona fide students caught up in recent security operations in Ekpoma.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Tuesday, Chief Orbih described the intervention as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the protection of innocent students, noting that it has helped ease tension and reassure parents, guardians, and the university community.
However, he expressed deep concern over attempts by some individuals and groups to politicise the security challenges in Ekpoma and misrepresent facts for political gain.
He said, “Security is a collective responsibility. It is neither a partisan issue nor a tool for political propaganda”, warning that misinformation and political exploitation of the situation only heighten tension and undermine efforts to restore peace.
Chief Orbih emphasised that AAU is an academic institution, not a battleground for political contestation, and that dragging the university and its students into political narratives is irresponsible and unacceptable.
Out of the 52 persons arrested in connection with the incident, 38 were confirmed to be students of AAU. While welcoming the release of innocent students, he called on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to continue thorough and impartial investigations to identify all individuals involved in criminal activities, including kidnapping, and ensure they are brought to justice regardless of status, influence, or political affiliation.
The Pro-Chancellor urged political leaders, community stakeholders, youth groups, and civil society actors to rise above politics and work with government and security agencies to address the root causes of insecurity.
He stressed that cooperation, intelligence sharing, and constructive engagement remain the most effective tools to confront criminal elements exploiting vulnerable environments.
Chief Orbih reaffirmed the commitment of the University Governing Council to collaborate with the Edo State Government, security agencies, and host communities to maintain a safe and conducive environment for learning and academic excellence.
He concluded, “This is a time for unity, responsibility, and truth, not propaganda. We must not allow opportunists to hijack a serious security matter and turn it into a vehicle for misinformation and division.”
“Ambrose Alli University belongs to all of us. Its safety, integrity, and future must be protected by all, irrespective of political or personal interests.”
