Federal Government has issued a fresh security and travel advisory to Nigerians living in or travelling to Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following the sharp escalation of military tensions in the Middle East.
Gatekeepers News reports that the advisory followed coordinated missile strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets in the early hours of Saturday, February 28, 2026, which triggered swift retaliatory attacks by Iran in parts of the Gulf region. The exchanges have raised global concerns over the risk of a wider regional conflict, disruptions to oil supply routes, and threats to civilian safety.
In a statement signed by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said it is closely monitoring what it described as an “evolving and volatile situation” across the Middle East, stressing that the advisory became necessary due to heightened security risks and the strong possibility of further escalation.
“All Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries are advised to remain extremely vigilant and conscious of their surroundings at all times. Avoid areas known to be strategic, military, or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints,” the statement said.
The government further urged citizens to restrict non-essential movement and travel within the affected countries until the security situation becomes clearer and more stable. Nigerians were also cautioned against participating in or staying close to large gatherings, protests, or public demonstrations, which could expose them to security threats.
In addition, the ministry advised Nigerians to strictly comply with all safety instructions and security directives issued by local authorities, noting that cooperation with host-country law enforcement agencies remains critical for personal safety. Citizens were also encouraged to stay informed through reliable international and local news outlets while avoiding misinformation, and to rely only on official channels for verified updates.
The statement added that the Nigerian embassy in Tehran and diplomatic missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia have been placed on high alert to provide consular support, emergency assistance, and timely communication to Nigerians within their jurisdictions.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to assess the situation and provide further updates as necessary. We wish to assure the general public that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government,” the statement added.
Beyond citizen safety, the Federal Government also called on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue to prevent a wider humanitarian and geopolitical crisis.
“The Government of Nigeria wishes to call on parties to the conflict to de-escalate the crisis by returning to the negotiation table for the interests of global peace and coexistence,” the statement said.
The advisory comes amid growing international fears that the renewed hostilities could destabilise the wider Middle East, disrupt global energy markets, and worsen humanitarian conditions across already fragile regions.
