African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed it is working towards adopting a consensus arrangement in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election instead of conducting a direct primary election.

Gatekeepers News reports that the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this during an interview on the One-on-One programme on Arise TV.

He explained that the party is considering a less expensive and more unifying method for choosing its flag bearer.

“We are trying as much as possible to adopt the consensus approach because that is the least costly for us. For us, the best case scenario is to be able to engineer consensus and that’s what we are working on,” he said.

Abdullahi also noted that indirect primaries are no longer being considered due to changes in the Electoral Act, leaving direct primaries and consensus as the remaining options.

He said the party believes consensus will help reduce internal conflict and financial pressure as preparations begin for the 2027 elections.

Speaking further, Abdullahi criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying its strength is largely tied to President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

“If you take power out of APC, APC is actually nothing. I know the party well,” he said.

He also predicted instability within the APC after Tinubu’s tenure, stating:

“Post Bola Tinubu, they will unravel quickly, that even they would be surprised. He is the glue holding the party together.”

Abdullahi added that APC functions mainly as a platform created to secure presidential victories, first for the late Muhammadu Buhari and later for Tinubu.

He further noted that the political landscape could change significantly ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting the opposition still has room to grow.
