Opposition politicians and supporters converged on the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja to protest what they described as irregularities and unfair decisions affecting the electoral process.
Gatekeepers News reports that the demonstration, organised under the platform of African Democratic Congress (ADC), saw protesters including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, David Mark and Rotimi Amachie gather at the commission’s office, chanting slogans and carrying placards demanding transparency and neutrality from the electoral body.
The protest was triggered by recent developments involving internal party disputes and INEC’s recognition of certain factions, which protesters argue could undermine democratic principles.
Speakers at the rally insisted that the protest was peaceful and aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy. They called on INEC to remain independent and avoid actions that could erode public confidence in the electoral system.
Security personnel were deployed to the area to maintain order as tensions rose briefly during the protest. However, no major incidents of violence were reported.
