INEC Adds 3.4 Million New Voters Nationwide

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered over 3.4 million new voters across Nigeria in its ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, reflecting growing public participation ahead of future elections.

Gatekeepers News reports that the commission recorded about 3,441,121 completed registrations as of early April 2026, combining both online pre-registration and physical registration at designated centres nationwide.

A breakdown of the figures shows that over 2 million Nigerians registered online, while more than 1.3 million completed their registration physically, indicating a strong adoption of the digital registration platform.

The registration drive has been largely dominated by young Nigerians. Citizens aged 18 to 34 account for over 68% of new registrants, highlighting increased youth engagement in the electoral process.

Gender data also shows a higher turnout among women, who make up about 55.8% of new voters, compared to 44.2% male registrants.

State-by-state figures reveal that Jigawa recorded the highest number of new voters, followed by Lagos and Kano, indicating strong participation across key regions.

INEC noted that the figures remain provisional, as the commission will still carry out data clean-up, including verification through its biometric system, before finalising the voter register.

The commission also urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing exercise before the deadline, stressing the importance of broad participation in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
