Motorcyclist Knocks Down Trader On BRT Lane

A senior citizen narrowly escaped death on Tuesday after being knocked down by a motorcyclist riding along the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane in Oshodi, Lagos.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the victim, a trader at the Arena Shopping Complex in Oshodi, was left unconscious on the road before passersby rushed to his aid, pulling him away from the path of oncoming BRT buses.

Sympathisers also helped gather his scattered wares while efforts were made to revive him. After some time, he began to regain consciousness gradually but was unable to provide his name or home address.

Although the motorcyclist remained at the scene to assist, witnesses questioned his decision to operate on the restricted BRT lane.

A commuter, Gloria Ude, criticised the practice, stressing that the lane was not designed for motorcycle use.

“I think it is good for the government to regulate the movement of motorcycle riders on BRT lanes. They need to know that the lanes are not meant for them and their plying the lane at all is an encroachment,” she said.

She further called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

“The government should be strict on its policies and ban riders from moving recklessly on the lanes not meant for them.”

Another sympathiser echoed her concerns, emphasising the need for preventive measures.

“The policy should be across board and should not absolve soldiers and police who take advantage of their uniforms to break the law with impunity, including riding dangerously on BRT lanes meant for prescribed buses. Prevention is better than cure,” the source said.
