Residents of several communities in Akure, Ondo State, staged a protest over worsening insecurity, blocking a major road to demand urgent government action.
Gatekeepers News reports that the protest involved residents of Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado communities in Akure North LGA, who took to the streets on Saturday to express anger over repeated attacks, killings, and kidnappings.
The demonstrators barricaded the busy Shoprite junction, located close to the governor’s office, causing heavy traffic disruption as they voiced frustration over what they described as persistent violence in their communities.
The protest followed a series of violent incidents in the area. Reports indicate that suspected gunmen recently attacked Igushin community, killing a poultry farmer and her daughter during a failed kidnap attempt. Barely a day later, another attack occurred in Ilado, where a youth was abducted and injured while trying to escape.
Speaking during the demonstration, a youth leader identified as Kunle condemned the growing insecurity and questioned the effectiveness of government spending on security.
“We are protesting the incessant killings and kidnappings in Imafon, Igushin and Ilado. Just two days ago, a mother and her daughter were killed, and yesterday, another young man was brutally attacked,” he said.
He added that residents are tired of the situation and demanded immediate intervention from authorities.
“We want the government to rise to its responsibility. We have not seen any impact of the monthly security votes being allocated. We are tired of burying our people every week while those responsible for our safety appear helpless.”
The protesters warned that demonstrations would continue until concrete steps are taken to restore safety and protect lives and property in the affected communities.
