Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president of Nigeria, has said he will make one last attempt at the presidency in the 2027 general election.
Gatekeepers News reports that speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain stated clearly that the next election will be his final shot at the country’s top office.
Recall that the 79 year old politician has contested for president multiple times and appeared on the ballot as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019, and 2023. Despite several attempts, he however has not secured victory.
Reflecting on leadership and generational transition, Atiku advised younger Nigerians interested in political power to first build experience under established leaders.
“I personally believe that they require experience and tutelage from the older generation,” he said.
The former vice-president, who flew the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, later defected to the ADC in 2025 amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition politics.
His latest position marks a shift from his earlier stance. In 2024, Atiku had expressed willingness to continue contesting for the presidency for as long as his health permits.
“Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy,” he said.
His declaration comes at a time when political activities and permutations ahead of the 2027 elections are gradually gaining momentum, with parties repositioning and potential candidates signaling interest in the race.
