Civil Servants To Earn More As FG Reviews Allowances

The federal government has approved an increase in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants in a move aimed at improving morale and strengthening welfare across the public service.

Gatekeepers Newreports that speaking at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, said the review covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), ensuring the reforms cut across all cadres.

Walson-Jack said the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a review of peculiar allowances applicable across all grade levels, with both junior and senior officers expected to record increases in earnings.

She added that key allowances, including duty tour allowance (DTA), estacode and book allowance, have also been reviewed upward, while virtually all allowances captured under the Public Service Rules are being revised.

One of the major reforms, she said, is the approval of 100 percent DTA for civil servants attending approved training programmes, even when such training does not require travel.

“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.

Walson-Jack also announced a new benefit scheme for retiring civil servants under the contributory pension scheme (CPS), revealing that retirees will receive 100 percent of their total annual emoluments as an exit package, in addition to their pension, beginning January 1, 2026.

According to her, the initiative is aimed at ensuring dignity in retirement.

“No public servant should leave service without adequate financial support,” she said.

She further confirmed the operationalisation of the employee compensation scheme, designed to provide financial protection for workers who suffer job-related accidents or death.
