Members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) have endorsed Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as the consensus governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 election.
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made by GAC chairman, Tajudeen Olusi, following a meeting of party leaders held at Lagos House, Marina, on Tuesday.
Olusi disclosed that all 21 GAC members present unanimously agreed to support Hamzat’s emergence as the party’s consensus candidate, noting that while the APC constitution provides for primaries, it also allows for consensus arrangements.
“The constitution of our party provides for primaries, and our party has guaranteed free primaries for all members, for all aspirants, for all interested individuals. However, that very constitution also allows us to look at the issue of consensus. Consensus is a platform, a means that can bring us together, that can bring peace and unity.
Following this option, we have adopted, we have all agreed that Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the current Deputy Governor of our state, is the consensus candidate of our party, and we have all pledged to stand by him,” Olusi said.
In a symbolic show of support, Olusi and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu jointly raised Hamzat’s hand, drawing applause from party leaders in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu revealed that members of the GAC had resolved to collectively fund Hamzat’s nomination form.
“All of my leaders and fathers present here have taxed themselves to fund the nomination form, regardless of the cost, for the deputy, who is our consensus candidate,” he said.
“They have all levied themselves—even drawing from their savings as retirees—to ensure they are the ones who purchase his nomination form.”
The governor also noted that Lagos State had similarly purchased the presidential interest form for Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The GAC, established in 1999 by Tinubu, serves as the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos State, playing a key role in succession planning, appointments, and zoning arrangements.
Hamzat, who has served as deputy governor since 2023, has in recent days intensified consultations with party stakeholders and secured key endorsements across the state.
