Yusuf Tuggar has lost the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Bauchi State after being defeated by former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar during the party’s primary election ahead of the 2027 polls.
Gatekeepers News reports that the results of the APC governorship primary, announced on Saturday, showed that Abubakar polled 57,517 votes to emerge winner of the contest, defeating six other aspirants, including Tuggar, who secured 26,001 votes to finish second.
John Abang, chairman of the APC governorship and state house of assembly primary election committee in Bauchi, announced the outcome of the exercise after the statewide voting process.
Other aspirants in the race included Nura Manu Soro, who scored 13,638 votes, Bala Wunti with 13,648 votes, Kabir Ma’aji with 8,157 votes, Baba Abubakar Suleiman with 7,688 votes, and Yakubu Abdullahi, who polled 7,181 votes.
The victory marks a major political comeback for Abubakar, who governed Bauchi State between 2015 and 2019 before losing his re-election bid to incumbent Governor Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Tuggar, who recently resigned as minister of foreign affairs to pursue the governorship ambition, had earlier pledged to respect the outcome of a credible primary election after obtaining the APC nomination form.
The primary election reportedly followed days of tension within the Bauchi APC, with some aspirants and supporters alleging irregularities and attempts to sideline contenders before the exercise.
