The Court of Appeal in Lagos has ordered a judicial review of proceedings surrounding the coroner’s inquest into the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege.
Gatekeepers News reports that the ruling is expected to examine issues raised over the conduct and handling of the ongoing inquest.
The case stems from the child’s death on January 7, 2026, after he underwent medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos. His parents have alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct, claiming mistakes were made during his treatment and transfer within the hospital.
A coroner’s inquest was initiated by the Lagos State Government following public concern over the circumstances of the death. During earlier proceedings, the family’s legal team said it would present evidence relating to alleged negligence, including claims of improper administration of medication and inadequate monitoring of the child’s condition.
The inquest has attracted significant public attention, with legal disputes emerging over how the proceedings should be conducted. The judicial review ordered by the appellate court is expected to determine whether the coroner’s process complied with the law and principles of fair hearing.
The outcome could influence the future direction of the inquest as authorities continue efforts to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Nkanu Adichie-Esege’s death.
