Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has revealed that past experiences of public backlash have influenced her decision to keep a lower profile when addressing national issues.

Gatekeepers News reports that the singer, whose real name is Tiwatope Savage, made the disclosure in an Instagram post amid growing calls for celebrities to use their platforms to speak out against Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

Responding to a fan who urged her to publicly comment on the situation, Tiwa explained that her reduced visibility on such matters should not be mistaken for indifference. According to her, previous attempts to speak on sensitive national issues attracted harsh criticism and public condemnation.

She wrote: “When I spoke I was crucified for it but trust me that won’t stop me from still being active.

“Just know just because you might not see my post about it does not mean I am not doing anything. I just don’t have to validate my actions, God sees. May God help us and guide us all with the right wisdom to overcome this tragedy.”

Her remarks come amid renewed public debate over the role of celebrities in addressing pressing national concerns, particularly the country’s escalating insecurity. Many Nigerians have argued that entertainers and influencers, given their vast reach and influence, should use their platforms to amplify public concerns over rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes.

Tiwa Savage has frequently faced scrutiny over her perceived silence on political and social issues, with critics often pointing to her friendship with Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Some have suggested that the relationship may influence her reluctance to publicly criticise government failures.

While some commentators view silence as a form of complicity, others, including fellow singer Portable and several public figures, have highlighted the risks associated with speaking out, including potential intimidation and the loss of professional opportunities.

Despite the criticism, Tiwa Savage insisted that her commitment to the country remains unwavering, stressing that much of her advocacy and support takes place away from public view.
