Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed a surveillance aircraft to support ongoing efforts to locate and rescue dozens of pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims were kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele on May 15.

Gatekeepers News reports that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, disclosed that the aircraft was deployed immediately after the incident was reported, providing real-time intelligence to security agencies involved in the search-and-rescue operation. According to him, information gathered from the aerial surveillance missions has been crucial in tracking developments and coordinating rescue efforts.

Makinde commended the Chief of the Air Staff and the Nigerian Air Force for their swift intervention, noting that the surveillance platform was made available while Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial assets are still being assembled at a Nigerian Air Force base in Lagos.

The Governor expressed optimism that the state’s aircraft, once operational, would strengthen security operations across Oyo and neighbouring states. He made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh, who represented the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke.

During the visit, the Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at securing the safe release of the abducted victims and tackling security threats in the region.

The abduction occurred when armed men attacked three schools in Oriire LGA, kidnapping 39 pupils and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46. Reports indicate that the attacks triggered widespread fear in the affected communities and led to increased calls for stronger security measures in the area.

Security agencies have continued joint air and ground operations in the search for the victims. The military had earlier deployed special forces and surveillance assets to the area as part of efforts to locate the abductees and dismantle the criminal networks responsible for the attacks.

Governor Makinde appealed to residents to remain patient and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring families that authorities are working around the clock to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped pupils and teachers.
