JUST IN: Veteran Actor Kola Oyewo Is Dead

Veteran Nigerian actor, filmmaker and theatre scholar, Kola Oyewo, has died at the age of 80.

Gatekeepers News reports that the respected thespian, who was widely celebrated for his contributions to Yoruba theatre and Nollywood, passed away on Friday.

Actor Kunle Afod confirmed the development in a tribute shared on Instagram, describing Oyewo’s death as the end of a remarkable era in Nigerian theatre and film.

“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on,” Afod wrote.

Before his death, Oyewo had spoken publicly about his prolonged battle with an enlarged prostate, revealing that the condition significantly affected his mobility and forced him to reduce his acting engagements. The veteran actor said the illness weakened him and prevented him from taking on physically demanding roles, although he remained grateful for his recovery efforts and medical treatment.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Osun State, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and went on to become one of the most respected figures in Nigerian theatre. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic play The Gods Are Not to Blame and featured in notable productions including Saworoide, Sango, Super Story and several Yoruba-language films.

Beyond the screen, Oyewo was also an accomplished academic. He earned a doctorate in Drama and taught at Obafemi Awolowo University, as well as other higher institutions, mentoring generations of actors, playwrights and scholars.

Just months before his death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated Oyewo on his 80th birthday, describing him as a “national treasure” and a distinguished cultural icon whose contributions left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s creative industry.
