The United Kingdom has appointed Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, succeeding Richard Montgomery, who has served as Britain’s top diplomat in the country since 2023.
Gatekeepers News reports that the appointment was announced by the UK government and the British High Commission, with Vowles expected to assume office in September 2026.
Vowles is currently serving as the UK’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023. He brings more than two decades of experience in diplomacy, international development, governance, and public policy across Africa and Asia.
Before his latest appointment, Vowles served as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Transformation Director and previously held diplomatic postings in Myanmar, Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. His career has included work in health, education, security, governance, and development programmes.
In a statement following his appointment, Vowles said he was honoured to take up the role, describing Nigeria as a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom. He expressed his commitment to working closely with Nigerian partners to deepen cooperation in trade, development, and security.
The appointment comes as both countries seek to strengthen bilateral relations in areas including investment, economic cooperation, security collaboration, education, and development partnerships.
