Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, is set to formally confer the traditional title of Sarkin Fulanin Ja’idanawa on retired Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar during a ceremony scheduled for Friday in Kano.

Gatekeepers News reports that the title is one of the senior traditional positions within the Kano Emirate and is awarded in recognition of distinguished service and contributions to society.

According to the Kano Emirate Council, Umar was appointed to the position in April following the death of the previous title holder, Abubakar Buhari. The council said the former air chief was selected because of his record of national service and his expected contributions to the development of the emirate.

Born in Kano on June 20, 1955, Umar joined the Nigerian Air Force in 1976 and later trained as a pilot in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He served extensively in the Presidential Air Fleet before rising to become the 17th Chief of Air Staff, a position he held from September 2010 to October 2012.

Over the years, the retired military officer has received several traditional honours across different parts of Nigeria. The upcoming investiture will add the title of Sarkin Fulanin Ja’idanawa to his list of recognitions and further strengthen his ties to the Kano Emirate.

The conferment ceremony is expected to attract traditional rulers, government officials, military veterans, and other dignitaries from across the country.
