Argentina Fight Back to Beat Egypt – Reach World Cup Quarter-finals

Defending champions Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after trailing by two goals in a dramatic Round of 16 clash.

Gatekeepers News reports that Egypt stunned Lionel Scaloni’s side with an early breakthrough from Yasser Ibrahim before Mostafa Ziko doubled the advantage in the second half, putting the African side on the brink of a famous victory.

Argentina also suffered another setback when Lionel Messi failed to convert a penalty, leaving the holders facing elimination.

However, Argentina mounted an extraordinary fightback in the closing stages. Cristian Romero headed home from Messi’s cross to reduce the deficit before Messi found the equaliser just minutes later. Midfielder Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround in stoppage time with the winning goal, sealing a memorable 3-2 victory.

The result keeps Argentina’s title defence alive and sends them into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Switzerland versus Colombia Round of 16 encounter.

Egypt, despite a spirited display and several outstanding saves from goalkeeper Mostafa Shobair, bowed out of the tournament after falling just short of a historic upset.
