Troops of the Nigerian Army have thwarted a suspected terrorist attempt to attack motorists after discovering and safely detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) planted along the Maiduguri–Gamboru main supply route in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to security sources quoted by TheCable, the high-pressure plate IED was believed to have been planted by suspected ISWAP/JAS terrorists to target military convoys and civilian road users travelling on the strategic highway.
The explosive device was reportedly discovered at about 5:31 p.m. on July 16 by troops of the 3 Battalion (Mechanised) and the 24 Task Force Brigade during a routine patrol in Maula.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was immediately deployed to the scene and successfully rendered the device safe, allowing normal traffic to resume along the road without casualties.
Military authorities said troops have intensified route clearance patrols and counter-IED operations on key roads across the North-East to prevent terrorists from disrupting military logistics and endangering civilians, as security forces continue efforts to contain insurgent activities in the region.
