Senator Rufai Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ending the party’s representation in the Senate from northern Nigeria.
Gatekeepers News reports that Hanga, who also serves as the Senate’s deputy minority whip, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3 and addressed to the NDC chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State. He said his decision takes immediate effect.
In the letter, the lawmaker said he was leaving the party after “careful reflection and personal deliberation”, explaining that he intends to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.
He thanked the ward leadership and members of the party for their support during his time in the NDC and requested that his name be removed from the party’s register.
Although Hanga did not reveal his next political destination or indicate whether he would join another political party, his exit leaves the NDC without a senator from northern Nigeria, marking a significant setback for the opposition party ahead of the 2027 political season.
