National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the sale, distribution, purchase and use of an unregistered menopause support product identified as Menofix Capsules, saying it has not been evaluated for safety, quality or efficacy and could pose serious health risks.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to the agency, an investigation by its Post Marketing Surveillance Directorate confirmed that the Menofix Capsules currently being marketed are not registered with NAFDAC and are different from two similarly named products that are legally registered in Nigeria — Menofix Herbal Capsule and Menofix Powder, both manufactured by Gudugudu Herbal Worldwide Enterprises.
The unregistered product is reportedly sold as a hormone-free, vegetarian-friendly multivitamin and herbal supplement for women experiencing perimenopause and menopause, and is widely available through online platforms and retail outlets.
NAFDAC said some ingredients reportedly contained in the circulating Menofix Capsules have been linked to rare cases of liver-related adverse effects, including hepatitis, elevated liver enzymes, jaundice and, in very rare instances, liver failure.
The agency said surveillance is ongoing to trace the distribution chain, while its zonal directors and state coordinators have been directed to remove the unregistered product from circulation wherever it is found.
The agency advised retailers, healthcare professionals and consumers to avoid selling or using the unregistered capsules and urged Nigerians to purchase medical products only from authorised or licensed suppliers.
It also encouraged the public and healthcare workers to report suspected counterfeit or substandard medicines, as well as any adverse reactions associated with medical products, through the appropriate NAFDAC reporting channels.
