The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and varying degrees of rainfall across several parts of Nigeria on Wednesday.
Gatekeepers News reports that in its daily weather outlook issued via X, the agency said parts of the northern states could experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall in the morning.
The affected areas include Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna and Kano states.
NiMet also forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across parts of Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states during the afternoon and evening.
For the North-Central region, the agency predicted cloudy conditions in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rainfall expected over parts of Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
It said most parts of the region could experience thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall later in the afternoon and evening.
In the southern states, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions in the morning, with chances of light rainfall over parts of Ondo, the South-South and South-East.
The agency said moderate to heavy rainfall could occur over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the afternoon and evening, while other parts of the region are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall.
NiMet warned that thunderstorms could be accompanied by strong winds, lightning and reduced visibility.
It advised residents of low-lying and flood-prone areas, particularly communities expecting moderate to heavy rainfall, to remain alert to the risk of flash floods.
Motorists were also urged to exercise caution during rainfall and avoid driving through flooded roads or areas with rapidly flowing water.
The agency advised residents in areas expecting thunderstorms to secure loose objects and avoid taking shelter under tall trees due to the risk of falling branches.
NiMet further advised members of the public to disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets before rainfall.
Airline operators were urged to obtain updated weather information and advisories from the agency to support effective planning and ensure safe flight operations.
