Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state following a diphtheria outbreak.
Gatekeepers News reports that the directive, issued by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, and applies to schools that have already resumed academic activities.
The government said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect pupils, students, teachers and non-teaching staff and help contain the spread of the infectious disease.
Parents and guardians have been advised to keep their children and wards at home, while school proprietors, administrators and teachers were directed to comply with the closure order.
The state government said the schools would remain closed until further notice, adding that a date for the resumption of academic activities would be communicated when it is considered safe to do so.
