Rufa’i Hanga Defects To APC – Leaving Kano Without Opposition Senator

Senator Rufa’i Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has defected from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gatekeepers News reports that Hanga, who was the only opposition senator from Kano, announced his defection on Saturday alongside other political leaders and supporters at a political event in the state.

His move follows his resignation from NDC in August after months of speculation over his political future. His resignation letter, dated August 3, said he decided to leave the party after personal reflection and deliberation.

The senator’s defection was subsequently announced in the Senate through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

With Hanga now in the APC, all three senators representing Kano State are members of the ruling party. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senator Kawu Sumaila were already APC members.

Hanga’s defection marks another political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
