Obi Pledges To Retain Naira Float If Elected President

Peter Obi

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said he will retain the floating of the naira introduced by President Bola Tinubu if elected president in 2027.

Gatekeepers News reports that Obi made the statement during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, while responding to a question on which policy of the Tinubu administration he would retain if he became president.

The former Anambra State governor identified the naira float as the Tinubu administration’s policy he would keep, although he said he would focus on improving productivity rather than simply defending the policy.

“He has one, the floating of the naira. I am not going to defend it, but I am going to put productivity, to make it more valuable to the people,” Obi said.

Obi said the priority should be to strengthen Nigeria’s productive capacity so that the currency could gain value through increased economic activity.

The naira was floated by the Tinubu administration in 2023 as part of its foreign exchange reforms, allowing market forces to play a greater role in determining the currency’s exchange rate.

Obi has previously said he would also have floated the naira but would have implemented the policy in a more organised manner and alongside measures to increase production.

The NDC candidate is expected to campaign on economic reforms and productivity as he seeks to unseat Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
