Vice-President Kashim Shettima is expected to attend the turbaning of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as the Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate.
Gatekeepers News reports that the ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Emir of Ilorin’s Palace on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, conferring the traditional title on the governor.
Shettima is expected to lead top dignitaries to the event, including governors, ministers and lawmakers from across the country.
The turbaning will make AbdulRazaq the first person to formally hold the Sardauna of Ilorin title, which carries the responsibility of serving as the defence chief of the Ilorin Emirate. The Emir had announced the conferment of the title in August 2024, citing the governor’s achievements and contributions to the development of the Ilorin Emirate.
The ceremony is also expected to feature the commissioning of two major projects by the Vice-President. Shettima will inaugurate the Kwara Garment Factory, which the state government said has the capacity to employ more than 4,000 people when operating at full capacity.
He is also expected to commission the multi-storey Revenue House of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service.
Ahead of the ceremony, activities have intensified in Ilorin, with banners and billboards mounted across the city and guests arriving for the event. The Emir’s Palace has also undergone renovation ahead of the turbaning.
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated AbdulRazaq on the conferment, describing the title as recognition of his leadership, public service and contributions to Kwara State. He urged the Governor to regard the honour as a call to greater service and responsibility.
