The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent flood alert to residents of low-lying, riverine, coastal and other flood-prone communities across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, urged residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures following a seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA).
Wahab, in a statement on Monday, said residents in areas including Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah and communities along the Ogun River should remain on high alert between September 19 and 25, 2026.
“Following the seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), I urge all Lagosians, particularly residents of low-lying, riverine, coastal and flood-prone communities, to take the warning seriously and act early,” Wahab said.
He listed other areas requiring heightened vigilance to include Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront, Jetty Terminal B and communities along the Ogun River and other waterways.
The commissioner also identified Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto, parts of Agboyi and other settlements downstream of Isheri Olofin as areas that should remain on high alert during the period.
“Especially low-lying areas and riverbank communities, including Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto, parts of Agboyi, and other settlements downstream of Isheri Olofin, to remain on high alert during the period 19th to 25th September,” he said.
Residents Urged to Take Precautions
Wahab advised residents in vulnerable locations to take immediate steps to protect lives and property, including moving to higher ground when necessary and keeping drains and waterways free of refuse.
He also warned residents against walking or driving through flooded roads and urged them to rely only on official weather and flood forecasts.
“Residents in vulnerable locations should move to safer and higher ground whenever necessary and should not wait for floodwaters to rise before taking action. No property is worth risking a life,” he pleaded.
The commissioner said the state government was intensifying its monitoring of rainfall and river levels while working with relevant agencies to strengthen flood prevention and emergency response measures.
He further called on residents to remain vigilant and comply with safety advisories throughout the period covered by the alert.
“Our priority remains the protection of lives and property. I encourage everyone to remain calm, vigilant and responsive to safety instructions as we continue to monitor the situation,” Wahab added.
