JUST IN: Labour Unions Call Off Strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have relaxed their nationwide strike, which began on Monday.

Gatekeepers News reports that the decision came after a joint emergency meeting of the union’s national executive council in Abuja.

Details of the agreement, according to a short notice seen by Gatekeepers News are:

1. An agreement was reached to allow for engagement with the Government to negotiate a minimum wage beyond N60,000, contrary to the Government’s initial fixed position of N60,000.

2. The timeline of two months initially proposed by the Government has been shortened to one week by Organized Labour to allow for a speedy conclusion on the new minimum wage.

3. Both NECs in session unanimously agreed to suspend the strike action to pave the way for continuous negotiation, a new approach in the Labour Movement.

4. Failure on the part of the Government to conclude with Labour within one week shall prompt Organised Labour to resume the strike without further notice.

According to the notice, workers are expected to resume work on Wednesday.

The strike had brought the country to a standstill, with widespread closures of schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports, as well as a shutdown of the national grid, leaving the nation in darkness.

The labour unions had demanded a new minimum wage and a reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike.
