Justice Ekerete Alan of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to detained singer Darlington Achakpo, known as Speed Darlington, in the sum of N20 million, with one surety required to match the bail amount.
Gatekeepers News reports that the decision came after the singer entered a plea of not guilty to two counts of alleged cybercrime during a bail application hearing conducted by his lawyer, Marshall Abubakar.
In the ruling, Justice Akpan specified that the surety must be a Level 10 civil servant residing in Abuja, and they are required to provide an affidavit of means. The court registrar was directed to verify the surety’s address, which should be either a staff member of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) or a federal employee.
The judge also mandated that the surety deposit their letters of appointment and last promotion for verification by the court’s deputy chief registrar.
Speed Darlington is also to surrender his international passport and both the defendant and the surety must submit two recent passport photographs to the court registrar.
Pending the fulfilment of these bail conditions, Speed Darlington has been ordered to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre.
The case has been adjourned till March 18 for trial proceedings.
The Inspector-General of Police has filed an amended charge against Speed Darlington related to the cybercrime allegations.
