US President Donald Trump has congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election victory and agreed to meet in the near future.

Gatekeepers News reports that the call comes as the two countries prepare to discuss a new economic and security relationship.

According to the Prime Minister’s office, Trump and Carney discussed the importance of Canada and the US working together as independent nations for their mutual benefit.

Carney’s Liberals are projected to win a minority government, with 169 seats, three short of the 172 needed for a majority.

The election outcome will require Carney to negotiate with other parties to pass legislation. The Liberals may find willing partners with the New Democrats and the Bloc Québécois. One potential area of agreement is legislation to help workers and industries affected by US tariffs.

Bloc Québécois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet has suggested a “truce” among parties while Canada negotiates trade with the US, citing the need for stability. Meanwhile, the White House has reiterated its stance on Canada becoming the 51st US state, despite Carney’s assertion that this will “never, ever happen.”

Carney has promised to address domestic issues, including the housing crisis and tax cuts for lower- and middle-income Canadians. He will also prepare for the G7 summit in June, hosted by Canada in Alberta.
