Ghana’s former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is now subject to an Interpol Red Notice for allegedly using his public office for personal gain.
Gatekeepers News reports that the international alert was issued after Ofori-Atta failed to honor a summons for questioning by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
According to the OSP, Ofori-Atta is under investigation for multiple high-profile contracts, including those linked to Ghana’s petroleum revenues, electricity supply, ambulance procurement, and the construction of the national cathedral.
One specific allegation involves the misuse of $58 million of public funds for the national cathedral project that never materialised.
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng emphasized the importance of in-person investigations, stating, “A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations.”
He further asserted, “We will not countenance this conduct—not in this case,” after Ofori-Atta’s lawyers requested a virtual appearance for interrogation on medical grounds.
The Red Notice serves as a global alert, urging law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest Ofori-Atta pending extradition proceedings.
Meanwhile, a Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant but rather a request to detain an individual pending further legal action.
