Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has won all 20 chairmanship positions in the Bauchi State local government elections held on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) announced the results after the conclusion of voting, counting, collation and verification across the state. According to the commission, APM candidates emerged victorious in all 20 local government areas.
The party also recorded a dominant performance in the councillorship elections, winning 319 of the 323 available seats. The remaining four positions were shared among the Social Democratic Party (SDP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP).
The election was, however, overshadowed by the decision of opposition parties in the state to boycott the exercise. The opposition coalition had announced its withdrawal ahead of the poll, alleging that the electoral process had been designed to favour the APM.
The opposition’s boycott meant that APM faced little competition in the chairmanship contests, contributing to the party’s sweeping victory across the state’s 20 local government areas.
BASIEC Chairperson, Jummai Abubakar, said the declared winners met the legal requirements for victory by securing the highest number of valid votes in their respective constituencies.
Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed dismissed concerns over the opposition boycott, describing the election as peaceful and maintaining that the withdrawal of the opposition parties did not invalidate the exercise. He also criticised the parties that stayed away from the poll.
The results give the APM control of all 20 local government chairmanship positions in Bauchi State, although the opposition’s boycott is likely to remain a major point of political debate surrounding the election.
