WAFCON: Babajide Dedicates Goal To Jota As Super Falcons Win 3-0 Against Tunisia

Nigeria’s Super Falcons recorded a 3-0 victory against Tunisia in their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) match, held at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.

Gatekeepers News reports that Rinsola Babajide, who delivered a standout performance in the match, contributed a goal and an assist in the Group B opener, while Asisat Oshoala and Chinwendu Ihezuo also found the net to secure all three points for Nigeria.

Head coach Justin Madugu named Oshoala and Ashleigh Plumptre in the starting lineup, with Rasheedat Ajibade captaining the team.

The Falcons quickly asserted dominance, and Oshoala opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a precise header from Babajide’s expertly delivered free-kick.

Babajide then doubled Nigeria’s lead just before half-time, muscling past a defender and firing a low shot inside the near post.

She paid tribute to late Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, who recently died in a car crash, by mimicking his trademark celebration.

Despite making early second-half substitutions to rest key players, the Falcons continued to control the game and create chances.

Osinachi Ohale missed a golden opportunity from close range, while Halimatu Ayinde and Gloria Alozie failed to hit the target.

Tunisia nearly pulled one back when Ohale appeared to foul Selma Zemzem in the box, but the referee ruled it out following a lengthy VAR review due to an earlier infringement.

Nigeria sealed the result in the 84th minute, with Ihezuo capping off a dominant display by smashing in a left-footed shot.

The win marked the Falcons’ first-ever competitive victory over Tunisia and extended their unbeaten streak against North African teams.

The Nigeria team will face Botswana in their next group match on Thursday, July 10.
