National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been allocated N10 billion by the National Economic Council (NEC) to enhance its preparedness and response initiatives in anticipation of the upcoming 2025 flood season.

Gatekeepers News reports that the funding will support comprehensive flood mitigation and response efforts across the nation.

The allocation was approved during a recent NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, which was chaired by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima.

During the meeting, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, presented an overview of the current flood situation in the country along with the agency’s strategic response plans.

Mrs. Umar also detailed NEMA’s flood preparedness strategy, including ongoing risk assessments, early warning systems, and coordinated response mechanisms for the upcoming flood season.

A press statement issued on Friday by Manzo Ezekiel, the Head of the Press Unit at NEMA, confirmed the fund’s release. In addition to the allocation for NEMA, the NEC approved the disbursement of N3 billion each to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as N1.5 billion each to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation. These funds are aimed at bolstering flood prevention measures and enhancing emergency response capabilities.

The statement noted, “Following her presentation and subsequent deliberations on the urgent need for proactive measures, the NEC approved the release of intervention funds to support nationwide flood mitigation and response efforts.

“The approved disbursements are as follows: N3bn each to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory; N1.5bn to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning; N1.5bn to the Federal Ministry of Environment; N1.5bn to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation; and N10bn to the National Emergency Management Agency.”

“Mrs. Zubaida Umar expressed profound appreciation to the vice president and members of the council for the timely and strategic intervention. She reaffirmed NEMA’s unwavering commitment to the efficient, transparent, and accountable utilisation of the allocated funds in line with the agency’s mandate to safeguard lives and livelihoods during emergencies.”

Umar further assured that NEMA would continue to work closely with state governments, relevant ministries, agencies, and partners to ensure a well-coordinated, timely, and people-centred flood response across the nation.
