The United States has extended the deadline for the sale of TikTok’s American operations to December 16, 2025.
Gatekeepers News reports that ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, had earlier been ordered to divest its US business by April under an executive order citing national security concerns. The Biden administration has insisted that TikTok’s US arm must be majority-owned by non-Chinese investors.
On September 16, President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that a group of very big companies had reached a deal to buy TikTok, though he did not give details. Hours later, the White House confirmed the deadline extension.
According to the official statement, enforcement of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act will be delayed until December 16. This means no penalties will be applied during the period for distributing, maintaining, or updating foreign-controlled applications.
