The Ekiti State Government has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils in kindergarten, nursery, primary, and secondary schools across the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement shared on its official X handle, the government said the ban will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session and applies to both public and private schools.
According to the directive, schools are to prioritise academic excellence rather than “organising elaborate parties.” The government explained that the measure was also introduced to reduce the financial pressure such events place on parents.
Alongside the ban, the state also introduced a new textbook review policy. Under the guidelines, primary schools can only change textbooks once every six years, while secondary schools are restricted to once every four years.
The government noted that the policy “aims to promote sustainability in education through a revised textbook review cycle.” Schools found violating the directive risk sanctions from the Ministry of Education.
With this decision, Ekiti joins states such as Imo, Edo, Ogun, Ondo, and Abia that have already prohibited graduation parties in schools.
