Nigeria Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following the intervention of Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power.
Gatekeepers News reports that the union had earlier directed its members to withdraw their services on September 25, but on Thursday, it announced the suspension of the action after an emergency meeting convened by the ministry in Abuja.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the National Independent System Operator (NISO), the Ministry of Labour, and the power ministry.
At the end of the talks, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). According to the document, TCN and NISO will “evaluate the financial implication of the report and prepare an implementation plan to be discussed with the minister and the unions.”
The MoU also directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to expedite a tariff review for TCN and NISO to support the process. It further stated that “no employee will be victimised for participating in the action.”
The agreement noted that the unions would meet again on October 6 and 7 to consider a committee report for possible implementation within the month.
“Based on the agreement reached, the union agreed to suspend their action to allow these resolutions to be activated,” the document added.
