Ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has assured residents of heightened security measures across Abuja.
Gatekeepers News reports that the FCT Police Command said it has commenced large-scale deployment of security personnel, including officers of the Police, Military, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebration.
In a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the command said security deployments had been strengthened across the territory ahead of the festivities.
According to the statement, the command, under the leadership of CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, remains committed to safeguarding residents and visitors during the festive period.
“To further reinforce security deployments, the Command, in collaboration with sister security agencies including the Military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), and other relevant stakeholders, has activated a coordinated joint security architecture under the code name ‘Operation Sweep FCT’,” the statement said.
The police explained that the operation has been divided into strategic sectors across the Federal Capital Territory, with security personnel conducting continuous patrols and coordinated operations aimed at preventing and responding swiftly to criminal activities.
As part of preventive security measures, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams have also been directed to carry out proactive sweeps of worship centres, recreational facilities, and other venues expected to attract large crowds during the celebration.
The command added that sustained intelligence-led operations and targeted raids on identified flashpoints and locations linked to illicit drug activities had also been ordered.
According to the statement, all security operations are expected to be conducted professionally and in line with established legal procedures.
The Commissioner of Police also held a strategic Zoom meeting with Divisional Police Officers and Divisional Crime Officers across the command, where he urged them to remain proactive, vigilant, and professional before, during, and after the celebrations.
“He emphasised the need for heightened visibility policing, prompt response to distress situations, and stronger engagement with communities,” the statement added.
The police boss further warned officers against any form of unprofessional conduct.
“The CP further warned that no form of unprofessional conduct would be tolerated and directed all officers to remain disciplined, properly dressed, courteous, and respectful in all interactions with members of the public,” the statement said.
The FCT Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged members of the public to remain security conscious and report suspicious activities through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 07057337653.
The command also wished Muslim faithful and residents of the FCT a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
