United States Embassy in Nigeria has confirmed that visa and passport services will continue despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the US government.
Gatekeepers News reports that the assurance follows concerns among Nigerians that the shutdown in Washington could disrupt visa processing, student travel plans, and other consular services.
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the embassy said in a notice posted on its official handle.
“At this time, scheduled passport and visa transit services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” it added.
The embassy explained that while its social media platforms would only provide critical safety updates until funding is restored, consular operations remain unaffected. It also advised Nigerians to visit travel.state.gov for the latest updates on passport processing and visa appointments.
The shutdown, which began after US lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to agree on a budget deal, stems from a standoff over Democratic demands for healthcare funding opposed by Republicans. As a result, several federal agencies have suspended activities, while essential services such as the military, postal service, and social welfare schemes continue to function.
